Reefsleep Whitsundays: sleeping on the Great Barrier Reef at Hardy Reef

Reefworld is one of two Cruise Whitsundays pontoons at Hardy Reef. After a refurbishment it reopened in mid-2026 as an overnight-only pontoon for Reefsleep and Reefsuites guests, with day visitors moved to the nearby Heart Pontoon. Journey Beyond says that change gives overnight guests the whole pontoon to themselves.

A North Queensland Register report on the reopening puts the limit at 36 overnight guests: 16 four-poster Reefbeds on the upper deck and two underwater Reefsuites. It says the Reefbeds can be enclosed for privacy or left open to the sky, and that bathrooms are shared. The operator describes a double Reefbed "under the stars" and a limited number of guests.

Reefsuites is the underwater option on the same pontoon, with floor-to-ceiling windows into the reef and a private ensuite. There are only two suites, and we did not find it listed on GetYourGuide, so book it directly with the operator.

1. Day one, morning. Depart Port of Airlie at 8:00 am (Daydream 7:35 am, Hamilton Island 9:00 am). Boats from Airlie stop at Hamilton Island. The Reefsuites page says guests arrive at the reef around 11 am.
2. Day one, afternoon. Swim, snorkel, ride the semi-submarine, sit in the underwater observatory, and join the guided snorkel safari.
3. Evening. Sunset drinks, then a chef-prepared dinner. The North Queensland Register describes a telescope on board for stargazing and whale watching.
4. Night. Sleep in your Reefbed on the top deck.
5. Day two. Breakfast and more time on the reef before the afternoon cruise back, arriving at Port of Airlie around 6:10 pm.

That is two crossings of roughly two and a half to three hours, the same as a day trip. If you get seasick, read our seasickness guide.

From the operator's Reefsleep inclusions when we checked:

• Return cruise and one night in a double Reefbed.
• Breakfast, lunch, dinner, morning and afternoon tea.
• Soft drinks, beer and wine; selected premium drinks cost extra.
• Snorkel gear, including a stinger suit.
• A guided snorkel safari with reef guides.
• The semi-submarine tour and underwater observatory.

Scuba diving and helicopter flights cost extra. The operator's "what to bring" list still mentions paying for guided snorkelling, which contradicts the inclusions list, so confirm when you book. Before you travel you will be asked to fill in a medical declaration and a dietary form. Bring a small overnight bag, toiletries, a change of clothes and a warm layer for the evening. The day trip is the better value for time if you mainly want to see the reef once. The overnight earns its place if the quiet hours are what you are after: sunset, the reef after dark, and a morning snorkel before anyone else arrives. Our pontoon guide covers the day trip in detail.

Good fit: couples and adults who want more than a rushed few hours on the reef; confident snorkellers who want to get in the water early and late; people who like the idea of sleeping outdoors.

Think twice: if you need a private bathroom (Reefbed guests share), sleep badly outdoors, or have young children. The operator says Reefsleep takes children aged 6 and over with a guardian, while the GetYourGuide listing says it is not suitable for children under 12. Check which applies before booking a family.
