Which trip shape suits which age
Babies and toddlers: a beach day with a base
ZigZag accepts infants from three months on its beach-only ticket. Its catamaran has an air-conditioned cabin and two bathrooms, and a water taxi runs between boat and beach all day, so you can leave the sand for a nap or some shade. If one parent wants to snorkel, ZigZag splits parents across sessions so one stays with the baby. The Cruise Whitsundays south-end cruise is shorter on the beach (up to two hours) and uses tenders with ramps.

From four, Camira and ZigZag's snorkel ticket open up. Camira is a full day, and Cruise Whitsundays says it suits children who are comfortable with a long time on the water. Snorkelling there needs adequate swimming ability, because the listing says no flotation devices are available. Healthdirect says motion sickness is most common between 7 and 12. Minimum age 4. Check the length of the day and that snorkellers must swim without flotation.

Ocean Rafting takes children from six months, weather permitting, but the bumpy fast ride and walking suit older, confident kids best. Both of its Airlie Beach options visit Hill Inlet. It provides life jackets and pool noodles for weaker swimmers, and the listing excludes pregnant guests. Our sailing versus speedboat guide covers the ride trade-off.

- No shops. Tourism Whitsundays lists composting toilets and picnic tables near the camping area and no shops or cafes. Ocean Rafting also lists toilets at the Hill Inlet lookout and the southern end.
- Little shade. Ocean Rafting says there is very little shade at some times of day. Cruise Whitsundays says National Parks has added two covered areas, and it sets up marquees for its guests. Pack a hat and sun layers regardless.
- No fresh water, no lifeguards, no phone signal. Queensland Parks lists all three, and advises at least 2 litres of drinking water per person per day.
- Crocodiles and sharks. Queensland Parks warns both can be in the sea at any time of year.
Stingers and children
Surf Life Saving Queensland says dangerous stingers such as box jellyfish and irukandji can be present all year, with higher risk from November to May. Queensland Parks warns that children may be particularly affected by stings because of their size, and advises full-body stinger suits and constant supervision in the water. For stings, it says to leave the water, douse the area with vinegar and get urgent medical help.
Cruise Whitsundays provides stinger suits year-round on its south-end cruise, and ZigZag carries kids' sizes in stinger season. Check small sizes when you book. Compare island and outer-reef snorkelling.
The Hill Inlet walk with little ones
Queensland Parks lists the Hill Inlet lookout track as a 1.3 kilometre return walk, graded moderate and uphill, and suggests allowing 40 minutes. It has no wheelchair-accessible facilities, so a baby carrier is likely to be easier than a pram. Boats reach Tongue Bay from mid to high tide, and Camira may switch to the southern end when the tide is low. If Hill Inlet is the goal, our Whitehaven guide explains which trips reach Hill Inlet. South-end trips have their own shorter lookout walk instead: ZigZag describes its guided walk as 900 metres and says it needs moderate fitness.
Before you book: the family checklist
- What is the minimum age, and is it weather dependent?
- How long is the whole day, including pickup stops?
- Is there a cabin, shade and a toilet on the boat? Can you get back to it from the beach?
- Are kids' stinger suits, life jackets and snorkel gear available in small sizes?
- Is lunch included, and do infants get meals? Cruise Whitsundays says infant meals are not included.
- Is hotel pickup included, and can you bring a pram aboard?
