Providence's GetYourGuide day listing describes a 62-foot gaff-rigged schooner. Its sunset listing calls the vessel a replica of an old Grand Banks fishing boat. You see working sails, rigging and a timber-boat layout; on the day trip guests may help haul a sail. That is the attraction for someone who wants a sailing experience rather than the fastest passage to the beach.
The label can be loose. Lady Enid is described in its listing as a 72-foot traditional timber sailing yacht, and makes an appealing classic-boat alternative, but we would not present it as the same sort of tall ship as Providence or Solway Lass. Providence's Whitehaven day is listed as nine hours to a full day. It goes towards Tongue Bay for the Hill Inlet walk, then to a snorkelling site. The page includes snorkel gear, tea, coffee and water, and says to choose the lunch option or bring your own. It offers a courtesy transfer from Airlie accommodation. You are aboard for much longer than on a fast beach transfer, so the crossing itself needs to be something you want.

The Providence sunset listing describes a two-hour sail across the bay, with a welcome drink and snack platter. It is not a trip to Whitehaven or Hill Inlet. You meet at the marina rather than using the day sail's hotel transfer. The listing excludes children under four and wheelchair users, asks guests to go barefoot on board, and says the master may alter or cancel the departure for conditions.
Lady Enid's adults-only sunset sail is another traditional timber-boat option. It is marketed as a quiet evening with an antipasto plate and a welcome drink; additional bar drinks are separate. Solway Lass appears on Sailing Whitsundays as a three-day, two-night private charter for a group of up to 32. The agent describes ten sails, a glass-bottom tender, cabins, meals and a skipper and crew. Its sample route includes Whitehaven, Hill Inlet and snorkelling. Availability and format should be checked directly; we did not find a matching GetYourGuide seat listing to link here, and a private charter is a different purchase from a Providence ticket.
Two named traditional vessels therefore cover quite different uses: Providence can fill an evening or a shared island day; Solway Lass is a larger group charter with sleeping space. What the rig changes, and what it does not
A schooner has sails to raise and lines around the deck, which can make the passage feel hands-on. Providence explicitly invites guests to help with sails or simply sit on deck. It is still a commercial tour with a master in charge, not a sailing lesson that guarantees you a turn at the helm. Wind, tides and the day's schedule determine how the crew operate the boat. Ask the operator if time under sail is central to your booking decision.
Traditional does not mean immune to swell. An island day asks you to spend hours on the boat, and the sunset trip can still move in a breeze.
