- Bareboat means your group skippers and provisions the vessel. Compare the formats.
- Do not assume the ordinary recreational powerboat rule settles a bareboat hire. Ask the charter company and Maritime Safety Queensland about your specific vessel. Read the licence distinction.
- A skipper takes responsibility for running a skippered charter; a sail guide on a bareboat may only advise. Understand the difference.
- For a short visit, a shared crewed sail avoids the training, provisioning and overnight logistics. Choose your route.
Three ways to go sailing
The word charter gets used for very different bookings. A bareboat is a multi-day hire without professional crew. You bring people who can share the work, stock the galley and decide where to anchor within the charter area. Whitsunday Rent a Yacht says its bareboats start from three nights and supplies a tender for going ashore.

The first two give you a boat for your group, though not the same degree of control. On any format the skipper may change the route for weather and tides. If your only aim is a Whitehaven visit, compare the practical Whitehaven day-trip formats first.
The licence answer needs two separate checks
Queensland's recreational marine licence page says an operator of a boat with an engine over 4.5 kW normally needs a marine licence, then explicitly says special rules apply to hire boats and directs readers to a local Maritime Safety Queensland office. It also describes limited recognition for interstate and overseas licences. A general answer copied from a recreational-boating FAQ is therefore a poor substitute for asking about the actual hire arrangement.
Whitsunday Rent a Yacht says no boating licence is required to hire its bareboats. Its onboard induction takes three to four hours and covers the vessel, sails and cruising area; it also provides radio and phone support and requires check-ins. That is this company's stated bareboat process, not a blanket promise that anyone can take any powered boat anywhere in Queensland. Before paying, tell the charter operator your experience and ask what competency, briefing or sail-guide arrangement it requires. Ask MSQ directly if your licence status is unclear.
Licence aside, self-skippering means accepting the work. The government's guidance says a boat driver must operate safely, carry the right safety equipment and ensure the boat is appropriately crewed. A calm passage in a brochure does not remove those responsibilities.
Skipper versus sail guide: who carries the responsibility?
Whitsunday Rent a Yacht distinguishes its fully skippered service from a sail guide added to a bareboat. On the skippered service, the professional skipper is responsible for running the vessel. A guide advises and helps you learn, but its bareboat guests retain responsibility for operating the boat. Ask exactly which arrangement is being sold rather than treating the two job titles as interchangeable.

Several nights and a willing crew
Ask a bareboat company for vessel availability, minimum charter, permitted cruising area, deposits and provisioning arrangements. Build in the induction time. A boat with beds and a galley still needs shopping, washing up and a safe anchorage each evening. That work may be exactly what your group wants.
One day with only your friends
A skippered private charter buys flexibility and privacy without handing you the helm. MiLady visits Hill Inlet, Whitehaven and a fringing-reef snorkel site on its published route. Do not assume a private booking guarantees a deserted beach or a fixed stop in poor conditions.
One day or one night, without the planning
Providence's shared schooner day sail includes Hill Inlet and snorkelling, while Matador's shared two-day trip includes a captain, crew, meals and snorkel equipment. Both are guided products rather than bareboats. A crewed trip is the sensible default for a visitor with a tight itinerary who wants the islands rather than a sailing practicum. Can a novice hire a bareboat?
Whitsunday Rent a Yacht says it briefs guests and can add training or a sail guide. That does not mean every operator will accept every crew. Give an honest account of your boating experience and ask for the acceptance criteria before booking.
Is a skippered boat private?
Only if you hire the whole vessel. A shared sailing tour also has a skipper, yet you travel with other guests. Check whether the price is per person or for exclusive use without relying on the word charter.
Is a bareboat a one-day alternative?
Not in the example reviewed: Rent a Yacht says its charters start at three nights. For one day, look at a private crewed day charter or a shared sail versus a faster boat.
Before you book: the bareboat or crewed checklist
- Who is legally and practically responsible for operating the vessel: your party, a skipper or a guide?
- Does this hire arrangement need a licence or specific experience? Confirm with the operator and MSQ where relevant.
- How long is the induction, and how many nights are required?
- What is included: food, fuel, linen, snorkel gear, park fees and a tender?
- What cruising limits and check-in requirements apply, and what happens if weather changes the route?
- For a crewed listing, are you buying exclusive use or seats on a shared boat?
