Ocean Rafting vs ZigZag: Hill Inlet or a long Whitehaven beach day?

Ocean Rafting uses a semi-rigid inflatable that travels quickly between islands. Both Airlie Beach tours list Whitehaven, Hill Inlet lookout, a guided walk and island-fringing-reef snorkelling. Northern Exposure schedules two Hook Island-area snorkel sites and a shorter north-end beach stop. Southern Lights schedules one site, the north-end lookout and longer time on southern Whitehaven. The main geographic distinction here is Hill Inlet. ZigZag does not advertise a visit to the famous northern lookout on its Super Flyer day trip. If that image is why you are travelling, an Ocean Rafting option is the direct choice among these two operators. Be realistic about the ride: the inflatable is open, and the operator warns that weather and tide can change the planned route.

Ocean Rafting includes snorkel kit, flotation devices, lunch, morning and afternoon tea and a mainland courtesy coach pickup when arranged. The GetYourGuide listing excludes pregnant people, people with back problems and people with mobility impairments. This matters more than any marketing description of how exciting the ride is.

ZigZag's Super Flyer is a larger, air-conditioned catamaran with indoor seating, outside decks, toilets and a licensed bar. It travels to southern Whitehaven, where an on-demand water taxi runs between boat and sand. Its guided 900-metre walk goes to the South Whitehaven Lookout. That lookout faces the long beach; it is a different place from Hill Inlet in the north.

There are two tickets on the same catamaran. The beach-only version keeps the day around southern Whitehaven and the boat. The snorkel version transfers participants to a smaller fast boat for one guided fringing-reef stop, roughly an hour at the site. That add-on changes the mix of your day and reduces time available on the beach. Both tickets include a buffet lunch and snacks; the snorkel ticket includes the equipment. The listed bar purchases are separate.

The return-to-boat option is meaningful if someone wants lunch, shade or a break from the sand. It does not mean the boat is at a jetty: a water taxi still mediates the transfer. If you need specific accessibility arrangements, ask the operator; the GYG listing says the tour is unsuitable for wheelchair users and guests with mobility impairments.

Ocean Rafting's FAQ gives Northern Exposure around one to one-and-a-half hours at Hill Inlet/northern Whitehaven and Southern Lights around two to two-and-a-half hours at the south end. ZigZag's GetYourGuide beach-only ticket says up to four hours at the southern beach, with on-demand transfers. The snorkel ticket explicitly has less than four hours there. ZigZag's own itinerary describes four to five hours as the beach-day window, but its GYG listing uses the more conservative “up to four hours”. Use the terms on the ticket you actually buy.

A day on the boat is not the same as a day on the sand. ZigZag schedules an 8:20 am check-in and a 9 am to 5 pm trip; Ocean Rafting's two versions have different departure and return times. Neither published length alone tells you how long your group will sit on the beach after walking, eating and transfers. If your sole aim is maximum uninterrupted south-end time, the ZigZag beach-only ticket has the clearest published allocation.

ZigZag accepts infants from three months on the beach ticket; its snorkel activity is for children aged four and older, although younger children may travel while parents take different snorkel sessions. Ocean Rafting says children from six months can usually join, subject to weather. For a toddler who needs a cabin and repeated access to the boat, ZigZag presents a different set of facilities. Ocean Rafting offers courtesy mainland accommodation pickup, with confirmation needed. ZigZag's GetYourGuide listing explicitly excludes hotel pickup and gives Coral Sea Marina, Meeting Point D, as check-in. Do not assume that two departures from Airlie have the same meeting point. For mixed groups, ZigZag lets beachgoers and snorkellers book different tickets aboard the same main vessel; Ocean Rafting's North and South options follow different itineraries altogether.

Swimming confidence also differs in practical terms. Ocean Rafting publishes snorkel instruction and flotation devices. ZigZag's snorkel ticket includes a guide, gear and a separate fast-boat transfer.
