The short answer
- Wear swimwear underneath light sun-protective clothing; bring a hat, sunglasses, towel and a dry layer. Start with the basics.
- For a fast boat, protect items from spray and choose footwear you can carry onto sand and a lookout track. Match the trip.
- For Hill Inlet, plan for an uphill track and a tender or wet landing, not only walking on soft sand. Choose shoes.
- For swimming, ask the operator about full-body stinger suits and sizes. Check protection.
The small bag that covers the changing conditions
Cruise Whitsundays tells guests to bring swimwear, a beach towel, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, protective clothing, comfortable shoes and a light jacket or sweater for a windy or cool day. Its large Whitehaven and reef vessels have indoor seating, but much of the activity is outside. The point of the dry layer is the ride home after swimming or sitting in wind, not an assumption that the Whitsundays are cold.
Pack a refillable water bottle and a means of keeping phone, booking details and dry clothes away from spray. Check what lunch and drinks the ticket actually includes. Queensland Parks says uninhabited islands have no fresh water and recommends carrying drinking water. The beach has limited natural shade, so sunscreen and a hat matter even if the vessel has a covered cabin. See the destination-specific Whitehaven packing list.
Use a compact bag you can manage during boarding. The Hardy Reef listing excludes large bags or luggage. Ask about storage if you need to carry mobility equipment or extra gear; do not assume you can leave a bag on the beach while the boat moves.
Dress for the actual vessel and landing
| Format | Wear or carry | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast inflatable | Secure hat or stow it; dry top and splash protection for small items. | Exposed ride, island walk and snorkel stop. |
| Sailing catamaran | Sun layer, swimwear, towel and light jacket; sandals or thongs for the walk if secure. | Camira includes beach, Hill Inlet and a tender. |
| Large Whitehaven cruiser | Swimwear and hat, with dry layer and comfortable walking footwear. | Cabin seating plus beach and optional southern lookout. |
| Hardy Reef pontoon | Swimwear, towel, sun protection and dry change. | Long crossing, snorkelling or dry observatory viewing. |
| Scenic flight | Comfortable clothes and footwear for aircraft steps; sunglasses and camera. | No beach landing or swimming on the linked flight. |
The Ocean Rafting listing asks for comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear, a towel, jacket and reusable water bottle. A fast vessel can be a lively ride; avoid loose items that could blow away. Camira's operator explicitly suggests thongs or sandals for its Hill Inlet bushwalk, but take the terrain and your own footing seriously. Compare what a sail and fast boat actually feel like.

Queensland Parks calls the Hill Inlet lookout track a moderate uphill walk of 1.3 km return and suggests 40 minutes. You might step between a boat, tender, wet sand and track. Wear secure sandals or shoes that you can walk in after they get wet; avoid relying on bare feet for a bushwalk. If your balance is uncertain, ask the operator about its landing and track before booking. A stylish but slippery sole is a poor trade on steps or a damp path.
The southern Whitehaven lookout is a separate walk; a south-end cruise does not automatically include Hill Inlet. The Chill & Grill operator calls its Hill Inlet experience moderately active, with tenders, sand and uneven ground. Read the access guide if the walking is a concern.
Stinger and sun protection in the water
Queensland Parks recommends full-body stinger suits or protective clothing when snorkelling or entering the water. Surf Life Saving Queensland puts the higher-risk season for dangerous tropical stingers at November to May, while noting year-round presence is possible. Cruise Whitsundays says suits are supplied year-round on its Whitehaven and Hardy Reef trips; Ocean Rafting includes a sunsuit or wetsuit. Check your listing and size in advance. Put swimwear underneath and bring a towel for when you come out.
Suits help with coverage but do not replace the crew's swimming instructions or a hat and sun layer when you are out of the water. If someone in your group does not swim, the Hardy Reef pontoon has an observatory and semi-submarine, subject to access considerations. See the short stinger-season and first-aid guide.

The linked Heart Reef fixed-wing flight does not land on Whitehaven. You need clothing for a transfer and an aircraft, not swimming gear for the activity itself. Its listing asks for camera, water and sunglasses and requires passengers to climb aircraft steps and platforms unaided. Check the operator's luggage rules, passenger restrictions and weather arrangements if a flight is your main excursion.
Are thongs enough for Hill Inlet?
Camira's operator says thongs or sandals are suitable, but Queensland Parks grades the track moderate and uphill. Choose shoes that stay on your feet and match your own balance.
Will I be cold on a boat in summer?
Wind and wet clothes can make the return uncomfortable even on a warm day. The operator packing lists recommend a light jacket or sweater for cool or windy conditions.
Before you book: the boat-trip clothing checklist
- Look at the itinerary for wet landings, snorkelling and lookout walks, not just the vessel photograph.
- Check whether stinger suits, snorkel gear and towels are supplied; confirm sizes.
- Bring a secure hat, sun layer, swimwear, towel, comfortable footwear, dry top and water.
- Check whether large bags are allowed and where dry belongings can be stored.
- If booking a flight, check aircraft boarding requirements instead of packing for a beach landing.
