Month-by-month: the trade-offs for a boat day
These are planning tendencies, not forecasts. The Bureau of Meteorology's Proserpine Airport rainfall averages climb sharply over summer and fall to their lowest levels around late winter and early spring. Airlie and the islands can differ from an inland airport. A skipper still makes the call for the actual day.

Wind and rain are different questions
Tourism Whitsundays describes southeast trade winds in winter. They can be useful for a sail, but the term does not promise a flat sea. Cruise Whitsundays says its Hardy Reef trip takes about three hours from Airlie and operates in rain when safe; its skipper can alter the itinerary for sea conditions. Its Whitehaven cruise may use another beach in strong northerlies.
Use the BoM Mackay coastal waters forecast for wind, sea and swell near departure. A rainy forecast alone does not tell you whether the vessel will sail, or whether visibility at a snorkel stop will be good. Whales are a bonus, not the itinerary
Tourism Whitsundays puts humpback season at about June to September. A standard Whitehaven or reef trip may encounter whales, but none of the linked listings promises a sighting. Which actual trip suits the season?
For a lower-commitment beach visit, the Cruise Whitsundays south-end cruise includes up to two hours on Whitehaven and island pickups; it does not reach Hill Inlet. It remains exposed to weather and can switch beach in strong northerlies.

Is July too windy?
July falls in the drier trade-wind period. Wind varies by day and route, so check the coastal forecast rather than treating the month as a cancellation warning.
Does it rain all day in February?
No monthly average predicts the hours of an individual day's rain. February is the wettest month in the Proserpine Airport averages, so spare dates are more useful than certainty.
How long should I stay for a weather buffer?
