The short answer
- Two full days: choose one island or beach day and one reef day, accepting little room to move. See the tight plan.
- Three full days: put the two boat priorities first and hold day three for weather or a lighter outing. Build three days.
- Five full days: spread boats apart, add a different format and protect a genuine spare day. See the longer plan.

What counts as a day here
A flight into Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine gets you to the mainland, then you transfer to Airlie. A flight into Hamilton Island leaves a ferry leg if your accommodation is on the mainland. Do not call an afternoon arrival a full Whitehaven day. The Cruise Whitsundays south-end product has morning and afternoon departures, but the full journey includes island pickup stops and up to two hours on the sand; the operator lists its return to Port of Airlie in the afternoon or early evening depending on departure. Outer-reef days run longer. Cruise Whitsundays describes around three hours each way from Airlie to Hardy Reef and about four hours at its pontoon. Put a long airport transfer or non-refundable dinner booking on another day if you can.
Two full days: one island day, one reef day
Day one: book the Airlie boat you care about most. Ocean Rafting's listing offers a north option with two snorkel stops and Hill Inlet or a south option with longer beach time and one snorkel stop. Both routes can change with tide and weather.

Providence's schooner visits Hill Inlet and a fringing reef, so it repeats some island scenery rather than delivering the outer reef. That can be exactly right for somebody who wants time under sail.

Three full days: make the third day flexible
Day one: Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, if that is the headline. Day two: Hardy Reef if seeing the outer reef matters. Day three: keep the date free until you know both departures went ahead. Then choose an inland tour, a scenic flight or another island experience. This is an editorial plan, not an operator package, and the sequence can be swapped to match live availability.
Cedar Creek Falls is a land-based outing near Airlie, though flow varies by season. The GetYourGuide listing describes an alternate stop when the falls are low. It is a useful different kind of day, not a substitute for cancelled reef access.

Five full days: add range, not duplicate stops
Start with Whitehaven or Hill Inlet on day one and Hardy Reef on day two or three. Leave a date after each that could take a moved booking. A sailing day later in the stay gives a different pace. Camira includes a Hill Inlet walk when tides permit and fringing-reef snorkelling, so check whether another Whitehaven visit is worth more to you than an inland day.
Use a spare morning for a flight if aerial views matter; it does not replace time on the sand. Alternatively, go inland to Eungella for a platypus-focused day: the listing says wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Keep the final full day movable instead of stacking five fixed bookings.

- Confirm your arrival airport and accommodation base. A Hamilton Island stay changes which departures are convenient. Compare Hamilton and Airlie as a base.
- Pick the one tour that would make the trip feel incomplete if missed. Book it on the first available full day.
- Book the second distinct experience on another full day, then preserve at least one movable date when possible.
- Read the actual listing for departure terminal, pickup, inclusion and cancellation terms. These can vary even between boats from the same town.
- Recheck the BoM forecast near departure and follow the operator's instructions rather than cancelling yourself on the strength of an app icon.
Common length-of-stay questions
Is two days enough for Whitehaven and the reef?
It can cover one trip to each if both run and your arrival and departure are outside those full days. There is no rescheduling space.
Are three nights the same as three days?
No. Check flight and ferry times: three nights may leave only two usable boat mornings. Count the full days between check-in and departure.
Do I need five days if I only want Whitehaven?
No. A shorter stay can work for one priority trip, although a spare date helps if conditions intervene. Compare the Whitehaven itineraries before committing.

- Count full mornings available after arrival and before departure.
- Rank Whitehaven, the outer reef, sailing and a flight instead of booking overlapping highlights blindly.
- Place the highest-priority boat early, with a later free date.
- Check ferry connections if you are based on Hamilton Island.
- Compare departure terminals and check-in times, not just tour duration.
- Read the cancellation and itinerary-change terms on each listing.
