Whitehaven Beach half day or full day? The time-ashore arithmetic

We have taken each trip's published departure and return times and its stated time on Whitehaven, then worked out the share of your day spent ashore. Times are from the operator page or GetYourGuide listing in September 2026; they change with season and tide, so check before you book. "Share ashore" is the stated beach time divided by the total. Operators say "up to", so the real figure can be lower, and getting on and off by tender takes time out of it. The table leaves out check-in and hotel transfers, which add more on top.

The Cruise Whitsundays half-day cruise is the classic "half day". From Port of Airlie the morning sailing leaves at 7:15 am and returns at 2:15 pm on the operator's timetable; the afternoon sailing leaves at 11:35 am and returns at 6:00 pm. (The GetYourGuide listing gives slightly later return times, so check yours.) Both give up to two hours on the southern end of Whitehaven.

The reason it takes seven hours is route. The boat stops at Daydream Island and Hamilton Island to pick up guests, and some sailings need a change of vessel at Hamilton Island. The operator's own listing is also clear that it does not go to Hill Inlet.

Who it suits: people short on time, families with young children who will not last a long day, and people staying on Hamilton or Daydream, where the ride is much shorter. Our Hamilton Island guide covers that route, and our Whitehaven with kids guide covers family timing.

A full day does not always mean much more beach. It depends on what else is in the day.

If your time is short but your budget is not, flying has the best share of the day on the sand. The helicopter listing below is sold as a two-hour outing: a 30-minute flight out and about 1.5 hours on the beach. The return lands at Proserpine Airport with a bus back to Airlie, so allow a half day, and confirm it is running. • Book the half day if you have one morning free, are travelling with small children, or are staying on Hamilton or Daydream Island.
• Book a beach-heavy full day if the beach itself is the point and you want Hill Inlet too.
• Book a mixed full day if you want snorkelling and a faster boat, and are fine with two hours or less on the sand.
• Fly if time is the constraint and you accept a short stay.

How long is the boat ride to Whitehaven?

It depends on the boat and route. On the half-day cruise, the timetable suggests roughly two and a half hours each way from Airlie, including island stops. Direct fast boats are quicker.

Is two hours at Whitehaven enough?

For a swim, a walk and photos, yes, but it is tight if you also want the southern lookout. It is not enough to reach Hill Inlet on foot.

Does a full day always include Hill Inlet?

No, and sailing trips may skip it at low tide. Check the listing, and read our Hill Inlet photo guide if the lookout is the priority.
