Why Hamilton is quicker
Queensland Parks puts Hamilton Island about 20 km south-east of Shute Harbour, and Whitehaven sits on the south-eastern side of Whitsunday Island. Hamilton Island says the beach is a thirty-minute trip on a high-speed catamaran. Ocean Rafting says its longest leg from Hamilton is just over 30 minutes, against just over an hour from Airlie Beach.

Half day with Hill Inlet: the Lookout Dash

Hamilton is the easiest place to fly and land. Hamilton Island Air's helicopter stopover flies over Heart Reef and Hill Inlet, then lands on Whitehaven for about 50 minutes with sparkling wine and water. Its R44 helicopters take two adults and a child. Its seaplanes land on the water and give about 75 minutes on the beach. Hamilton Island's page for the seaplane says it is unsuitable for non-swimmers and children up to 13, while the operator's own page says family friendly from age 2, so ask before booking. Hamilton or Airlie as your Whitehaven base
For a Whitehaven day specifically:
- Hamilton suits you if you want the shortest crossing, a helicopter or seaplane landing, or a half day that still reaches Hill Inlet. Hamilton has the only commercial airport in the islands, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns.
- Airlie suits you if you want more choice: fast boats, big catamarans with long beach stops, sailing days and more flights. Many Airlie tours include hotel pickup. Our Whitehaven tours guide compares them.
- Hamilton is cashless, according to Cruise Whitsundays, so bring a card.
- The ferry between them takes about 60 minutes, per Hamilton Island. Cruise Whitsundays also runs a combined Hamilton Island and Whitehaven day from Airlie.
If you are staying in Airlie, the Cruise Whitsundays south-end cruise stops at Hamilton on the way, and some departures change vessel there.

How long is the boat ride from Hamilton Island to Whitehaven?
About 30 minutes by fast boat or high-speed catamaran, per Ocean Rafting and Hamilton Island. The Cruise Whitsundays afternoon sample itinerary leaves Hamilton at 1.10 pm and arrives at 1.50 pm.
Can you see Hill Inlet on a half day from Hamilton?
Yes, on the Ocean Rafting Half-Day Dash, which includes the lookout walk. The Cruise Whitsundays half day goes to the south end only.
Can children go?
