How to get to Airlie Beach: airports, transfers and boat terminals

Whitsunday Coast Airport is at Proserpine, commonly shown as PPP when choosing flights. It is roughly 40 km from Airlie Beach by road; Coral Sea Marina puts the transfer-bus journey to the marina at about 45 minutes, and a shared shuttle with several drop-offs can take longer. Buses, taxis and car hire are available. Confirm the transfer schedule when you choose a late arrival or an early departure rather than assuming an airport bus runs whenever you need it.

If your tour leaves very early, travel to Airlie the previous day. Do not use the airport-to-town estimate as your boat check-in allowance. Your actual trip may start at Port of Airlie, at a particular berth in Coral Sea Marina, or outside Airlie in Shute Harbour.

Coral Sea Marina's own FAQ estimates about 45 minutes by transfer bus from Proserpine to the marina, rather than the tourism body's approximate 25-minute Airlie road journey. The difference is unsurprising: they describe different destinations and transfer types. Leave margin for stops and baggage. Count usable days rather than arrival nights.

Hamilton Island Airport, HTI, is on the island. Cruise Whitsundays operates ferry connections to Airlie and its island resorts. For an Airlie hotel, book the matching airport-to-mainland transfer before you fly; the operator advises advance bookings, especially for airport connections. Its airport jetty is for passengers connecting with flights and is near the airline terminal. If you are staying on Hamilton Island, the Hamilton Island Marina is the ordinary access point for other travel.

The ferry timetable can change with airline schedules. Cruise Whitsundays says to arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes ahead if you need ticketing or luggage handling; its luggage check-in closes earlier than boarding. Check which mainland terminal the ticket uses and how you will reach your hotel from it. Coral Sea Marina notes that Hamilton Island arrivals take the ferry into the Airlie Beach maritime terminal and then need a road transfer to the marina, so treat the confirmed ticket and live operator timetable as decisive.

Hamilton Airport can be sensible if its flight suits your wider journey or you also stay on the island. It is not an airport on the mainland. Compare Hamilton and Airlie as day-trip bases before choosing on airfare alone.

Port of Airlie is not another name for Coral Sea Marina. Cruise Whitsundays says most Airlie accommodation is in walking range of Port of Airlie, but this varies by address. A listing may name a hotel pickup instead of a terminal, or may exclude pickup. Follow the confirmation, not a generic directions result.

The Bruce Highway passes Proserpine; Airlie Beach is reached along Shute Harbour Road. Long-distance coaches run into Airlie, and Queensland Rail's Spirit of Queensland stops at Proserpine, which still leaves a road transfer to Airlie. Rail travellers should check the connection to their accommodation instead of assuming the station is on the Airlie waterfront.

A hire car helps with inland outings but is not required for every boat day. Confirm parking at the departure point if driving. A coach can avoid airport and car-hire logistics, but scheduled arrivals may not match morning boat check-in. The practical rule is to sleep in the area the night before your first early departure.
