Getting around Airlie Beach without a car: buses, walks and tour pickups

Most central Airlie boat days do not need a hire car. The details that catch people out are a separate airport transfer, two different town marinas and a Shute Harbour departure that is not in town.

The short answer

  • From Whitsunday Coast Airport, book an airport transfer; the local 860 timetable does not serve the airport. Separate the two services.
  • Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina are different terminals on opposite sides of central town. Plan the walk.
  • Route 860 reaches Shute Harbour, but match its particular service to boat check-in. Check the bus.
  • Some tours collect from local hotels; others require you at a berth. Compare real listings.

The airport shuttle is not the local bus

Whitsunday Transit offers a Whitsunday Coast Airport transfer to Airlie Beach, describing the journey as about 40 minutes. Its local-bus timetable expressly excludes airport services and Queensland Rail transfers. Route 860 running through Proserpine is not proof that the ordinary bus will collect you from an arriving flight. Book or arrange the flight-matched airport transfer separately, then give the operator your hotel or requested drop-off.

Coral Sea Marina estimates around 45 minutes for a transfer bus from the airport to the marina; multiple stops can alter the real time. Do not land and race directly to a boat check-in on the strength of one driving estimate. If arriving via Hamilton Island Airport, a ferry and further local transfer are involved; our arrival guide covers that airport decision so this page can focus on moving around once in Airlie.

Check the return shuttle pickup address when booking an early flight. An airport transfer is a separately scheduled journey, not a benefit attached to a Whitehaven tour unless its listing explicitly says so. Keep your ticket confirmation and the operator's phone number accessible offline if you are arriving late.

Walks between town and the boat terminals

Car-free links from central Airlie Beach
DestinationPractical routeMain catch
Port of AirlieWalk south-east from the main street and lagoon area; Cruise Whitsundays says most Airlie accommodation is within easy walking distance.Hills and hotel location vary; check the precise terminal, not just the port name.
Coral Sea MarinaWalk north-west via the waterfront boardwalk; marina FAQ describes Woolworths in central Airlie as a 15-minute stroll.Allow more to reach a particular northern berth and check-in point.
Shute HarbourUse local bus 860, taxi or prearranged transfer rather than walking from central Airlie.Outside the town-centre marina pair; check the last return bus.

These are orientation estimates, not door-to-gangway promises. Port of Airlie is the Cruise Whitsundays terminal for its south-end Whitehaven and Hardy Reef products. ZigZag names Meeting Point D at Coral Sea Marina. Ocean Rafting and Providence also meet in the Coral Sea Marina area. Your confirmation controls the exact berth and check-in time. Ask your accommodation for the least steep walking route if carrying luggage, and give yourself more time in heat or rain.

The marina FAQ describes the central supermarket as a short boardwalk stroll, useful for supplies before a boat day. Its bus stop is at the south village, not necessarily at the berth printed on a tour voucher. A taxi can be sensible for an early sailing even if the same distance is easy on foot later. Pack for the boat and the walk to it.

Route 860, Shute Harbour and the return

Whitsunday Transit's published weekday timetable shows route 860 between Proserpine and Shute Harbour, with stops including Airlie Beach Police Station and selected services at Port of Airlie or Coral Sea Marina. Those marina stops are not on every bus. Use the live day-of-week timetable, direction and named stop, and check the return trip before relying on the bus for a morning boat.

Shute Harbour Terminal is a separate destination beyond Airlie. The route serves it, but a tour described as leaving from Shute Harbour does not become a town-centre departure. Ask whether a hotel pickup is included, where the coach waits and how long the transfer takes. When the bus timing does not give a reliable margin for boat check-in, use a taxi or operator transfer. At the end of a long boat day, verify that a bus still runs after disembarkation.

Coral Sea Marina's own FAQ says buses from its transport plaza go towards Shute Harbour, Whitsunday Plaza and Proserpine, with a published interval of about 30 to 45 minutes, though not every timetabled bus calls there. It is a useful network, not a substitute for checking the exact bus you intend to catch. Cash and card ticketing details can change, so verify the current Translink fare and payment advice without budgeting from an old blog post.

Which bookable tours collect you?

The GetYourGuide Ocean Rafting listing includes courtesy bus pickup and drop-off from local hotels and parks. Its Whitehaven trip covers Hill Inlet and fringing-reef snorkelling, with north and south itinerary choices. Confirm that your particular accommodation is in its collection area and that the pickup has been added to your booking; the boat itself departs the marina.

Confirm your address, pickup time, route choice and marina check-in.

Providence's day-sail listing names a courtesy bus transfer from selected Airlie accommodation and prints its pickup list. Reconfirm the pickup time and place with the operator the day before. Lunch is an option, not a universal inclusion. Its day is long and the operator can change the route for weather.

Check your hotel on the pickup list and choose the lunch option deliberately.

By contrast, ZigZag's listing explicitly excludes hotel pickup and names Coral Sea Marina Meeting Point D; it visits south Whitehaven, not Hill Inlet. Walk, use a suitable bus or arrange a taxi if the meeting point is too far from your room.

ZigZag from Coral Sea Marina

No hotel pickup; confirm Meeting Point D and your own return transport.

The Cruise Whitsundays south-end Whitehaven GetYourGuide listing has a Port of Airlie meeting point and excludes hotel pickup on that ticket. The operator may sell an additional coach transfer direct on selected products, but do not treat it as included.

No Hill Inlet; check the Port of Airlie meeting point and pickup exclusion.

Questions about staying car-free

Can I walk from the lagoon to both marinas?

Yes for most able walkers based centrally, but they are in different directions. Coral Sea Marina says the central Airlie supermarket is a short 15-minute boardwalk stroll away; Port of Airlie is to the other side of town. Add time from your actual hotel and berth.

Does bus 860 pick up at Proserpine Airport?

No: Whitsunday Transit says its local timetables do not cover airport services. Book an airport transfer separately.

Can I reach Shute Harbour without a car?

Yes, by route 860 when the timetable fits, or by taxi or an operator-arranged transfer. Check the return service as carefully as the outward one.

Before you book: the car-free Airlie checklist

  • Locate your accommodation relative to Port of Airlie and Coral Sea Marina, not just “Airlie Beach”.
  • Arrange Whitsunday Coast Airport transfers independently of local route 860.
  • Read the tour voucher for exact berth, meeting time and pickup entitlement.
  • If relying on a courtesy bus, confirm your specific hotel is covered and the driver has your booking.
  • For Shute Harbour, check both the outbound and last workable return bus.
  • Leave time for the walk, weather, luggage and check-in; use the free-day guide for local alternatives if a connection fails.
