Where is Whitehaven Beach? A map in words

Whitehaven Beach is on the eastern side of Whitsunday Island, not in Airlie Beach or on Hamilton Island. Its southern beach and northern Hill Inlet end are different tour stops. Get that distinction clear before comparing boats.

The short answer

  • Whitehaven is on Whitsunday Island in Whitsunday Islands National Park, which Queensland Parks places about 25 km east of Airlie Beach; the beach's day-use area is roughly 40 km (21.6 nautical miles) from Shute Harbour by one boat route. Picture the map.
  • Hamilton Island lies nearby to the south-west; the island's own visitor site describes roughly a 30-minute high-speed catamaran trip to Whitehaven. Compare origins.
  • The familiar beach visit at the south end is not automatically a Hill Inlet lookout visit at the north end. Separate the two.
  • There is no road onto the beach. Check the exact landing, departure port and itinerary. Choose the correct ticket.

The map in words

Start on the mainland at Airlie Beach. Look east across the Whitsunday Passage to the island chain. Whitsunday Island is the large national-park island with Whitehaven running along its eastern shore. Hamilton Island is a separate inhabited island to its south-west, not the island Whitehaven belongs to. Daydream Island is another separate island on some mainland boat routes.

Queensland Parks places the Whitehaven day-use area on the south-eastern side of Whitsunday Island, and describes the national park as a whole as about 25 km east of Airlie Beach. It also gives about 21.6 nautical miles, or 40 km, by a specified anti-clockwise boat route from Shute Harbour. These are different measurements: the first is orientation; the second is one navigable route. Do not divide 25 km by a boat's speed and present the result as a timetable.

At the top of the beach, Hill Inlet is the tidal inlet whose changing sand patterns are seen from a lookout reached via Tongue Bay. That boat access and walk are distinct from disembarking at the southern day-use area. Tides at Hill Inlet are a separate timing question; the location itself is fixed.

Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island are different starting points

From Airlie Beach, day boats commonly depart Port of Airlie or Coral Sea Marina. Cruise Whitsundays' south-end trip departs Port of Airlie, calls at Daydream and Hamilton on its route, and gives up to two hours on the beach; some connections require a change of vessel. Its published morning timetable runs roughly seven hours from Port of Airlie (7:15am to about 2:15pm, subject to change) for up to two hours on the sand. Ocean Rafting departs from the Airlie side on a separate fast-boat itinerary with Hill Inlet and snorkelling. Compare Airlie departures for that booking decision.

Hamilton Island's own visitor page puts Whitehaven about a 30-minute trip away by high-speed catamaran. That is a product/route indication, not a guarantee for every boat, tide or landing. A Hamilton departure avoids the mainland-island pickup leg but restricts you to services that actually take passengers from Hamilton. Do not book an Airlie-only tour assuming it will collect you at your Hamilton accommodation. See the Hamilton departure guide for the exact options.

Queensland Parks says commercial boats, private vessels, camper transfers and some aircraft serve the park. Its day-use area is accessible by boat or kayak. A fixed-wing scenic flight can show the beach from above, but it does not land. For the full list of transport forms rather than a second itinerary list here, read how to get to Whitehaven Beach.

South end and Hill Inlet are not interchangeable

At the southern end, the Whitehaven day-use area has picnic tables and non-flush toilets. Queensland Parks says it is accessible at all tides. Cruise Whitsundays' morning/afternoon beach cruise, and ZigZag's beach day, focus on this end. The south lookout is not the Hill Inlet lookout. At the north, the Hill Inlet lookout walk begins from the Tongue Bay side and looks over the inlet and northern sands. Ocean Rafting's linked itinerary includes Hill Inlet and Whitehaven, with route changes possible in wind and tide.

Three ways a listing might describe “Whitehaven”
Wording to look forWhat it coversWhat it does not promise
South Whitehaven beachLanding at the southern day-use areaHill Inlet lookout at the opposite end
Hill Inlet lookout or Tongue BayNorth-end access and lookout walk, if conditions permitA long stop at the southern beach

Compare time ashore on half- and full-day products rather than taking “half day” to mean half a day at the beach.

Three real tickets, three different views

The booking decision should start with one question: must you stand on the sand, walk to Hill Inlet, or just see the geography? The following listings answer it differently.

Land at the south end

This large-vessel beach cruise reaches southern Whitehaven with a short stay, but the operator expressly says no Hill Inlet.

South Whitehaven beach cruise

Check Port of Airlie departure and any Hamilton connection.

Include Hill Inlet lookout

The fast-boat listing combines a lookout walk, Whitehaven time and island snorkelling. The order can change with conditions.

Ocean Rafting Whitehaven and Hill Inlet

Check northern versus southern itinerary emphasis and fitness requirements.

See both from above, without landing

The fixed-wing flight passes over Whitehaven and Hill Inlet and continues to Heart Reef. It is an aerial view, not a beach transfer.

Heart Reef scenic flight

Confirm flight route, airport transfer and no beach landing.

Is Whitehaven Beach on Hamilton Island?

No. Hamilton is a nearby departure island; Whitehaven belongs to Whitsunday Island.

Can I drive there from Airlie?

No road links the mainland to Whitsunday Island. Arrange a vessel or a flight that explicitly includes a landing; the linked fixed-wing sightseeing flight does not.

Does every Whitehaven tour include the famous swirling-sand view?

No. Look for “Hill Inlet lookout”, not merely “Whitehaven” or “South Whitehaven lookout”. Tides and weather can alter whether that lookout is visited.

Before you book: the Whitehaven location checklist

  • Does the listing say Whitsunday Island, Whitehaven south end, Hill Inlet or Tongue Bay?
  • Is your departure actually Port of Airlie, Coral Sea Marina, Shute Harbour or Hamilton Island?
  • Is the quoted duration boat time, total excursion time, time on the beach or time in the air?
  • Does the tour land, or only fly over the coast?
  • If Hill Inlet is essential, does the itinerary name the Hill Inlet lookout rather than only the south lookout?
